Description:

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. A finely preserved reliquary cross that is cast from bronze in 3 parts - the front, the back, and the suspension bale - before being assembled; one side is now removable, but suspension bale remains attached to other side. The obverse face features an incised image of Jesus Christ on the crucifix, and the reverse side features another religious figure standing with arms outstretched towards a tree or leaf on either side. Size: 0.48" L x 1.93" W x 3.96" H (1.2 cm x 4.9 cm x 10.1 cm)

  • Condition: One side is removable, but suspension bale is still attached to the other side. Minor abrasions, with light encrustations within interior cavities, otherwise intact and excellent. Great patina throughout, and nice preservation to incised decorations.
