Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. late 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A votive ceramic plaque depicting a man with the characteristic long, flowing beard, in profile, striding forward. Size: 1.7" W x 4.25" H (4.3 cm x 10.8 cm)

During this time period, the Mesopotamians produced great numbers of clay plaques, many of which survive to this day. They were made for use by private individuals or families in the home, which is where most have been excavated. They are often found broken, probably because their ritual power was no longer needed or had expired.
