Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, Third Dynasty of Ur, ca. 2119 to 2004 BCE. A fabulously preserved stone stamp seal bead depicting the presentation of a worshiper to a seated deity. An interceding goddess in a tiered dress leads the worshiper, who holds one hand up in a pious gesture. A group of animals resembling a bird, a scorpion, and a lizard are seen behind the worshiper. Known as 'kishib' in Sumerian, cylinder seals like this example were used by individuals in every level of society - from kings and rulers, to merchants and tradespeople, to workers and slaves - to communicate messages.
