Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, 3000 to 2000 BCE. A hand carved limestone amulet with 3 anthropomorphic heads protruding and a drilled hole for suspension. The heads have concentric circular eyes, characteristic of Ancient Sumerian art, each head may signify watchfulness and seeing all directions. This may have been a protective charm, and the overall shape is like a club and these charms are sometimes referred to as "mace-headed." Size: 1.3" Diameter x 0.75" W (3.3 cm x 1.9 cm)
