Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A brilliant, large red jasper stamp seal bead, pierced through vertically for suspension, bearing a fascinating incised image of repeated ibexes - symbols of masculinity, virility, and hunting prowess in the ancient Near East. Once, this seal would have belonged to a single individual, who would have worn it on a bracelet or necklace, ready to be taken off and rolled across soft clay to produce a signature. Size: 3.4" W x 2" H (8.6 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities; ex-Mr. Khabbazi, January 10, 1991
