Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A fantastic necklace strung with over 100 ancient beads made from faience, steatite, and carnelian. The chalky white faience beads are petite and barrel shaped but gradually increase in size with dark gray and red-brown steatite beads towards the center. The necklace is symmetrically balanced with large spherical and disc shaped carnelian beads, as well as spherical black steatite beads at the center. A lovely strand of Sumerian beads! Size of strand: 19.5" L (49.5 cm); largest pendant bead: .75" W (1.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Shenas collection, Queens, New York acquired before 1980

  • Condition: Chips, nicks, and losses to beads. One carnelian bead has an inventory number written on surface. Strung in modern times; however, the cording appears to be older and we would recommend replacing it if you intend to wear this piece.
