Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. An elaborate and attractive necklace formed from dozens of pale-blue and chalky-white faience beads, smooth carnelian beads of a warm vermilion hue, and lightly carinated alabaster spheres. A pair of discoid faience beads flank either projecting corner of the central pendant which is carved from gorgeous banded agate of a pale, nearly-colorless hue. Strung in modern times and capped with a loop and lobster clasp combo, this is an elegant and wearable example of fine Sumerian artistry! Size (necklace): 24.25" L (61.6 cm); size of largest bead (central pendant): 1.5" L x 0.5" W (3.8 cm x 1.3 cm).
