Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A beautiful necklace formed from dozens of faience beads in chalky-white and pale-blue hues, three vermilion-hued carnelian beads, and a coral-pink stone bead. Hanging below the necklace strand is an elaborate, mold-formed faience pendant depicting an abstract scene of large circles surrounded by smaller circles, with protruding sinuous 'arms,' and a raised 'head' along the bottom. Strung in modern times and capped with a loop and lobster clasp combo, this is an elegant necklace meant to be worn on any occasion. Size (necklace): 17" L (43.2 cm); size of largest bead (pendant): 1.8" W x 2.1" H (4.6 cm x 5.3 cm).

  • Condition: Pendant repaired from two large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads, with light encrustations within drilled suspension holes, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
