Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumeria, ca. 2500 to 2200 BCE. A shell carved and modeled into a bull-shaped amulet, with the body following the natural shape of the shell for the most part. Twin holes are drilled for eyes and a hole through the center may have been for suspension or to sew it onto a piece of clothing. The surface of the shell is a beautiful marbled color, varying from white to chestnut brown. Size: 2" L x 1.2" H (5.1 cm x 3 cm)

The Sumerians believed strongly in magic, and the magical powers of amulets, created to be deterrents against the Evil Eye. The oldest of these amulets are stone animal form ones like these. The bull was a symbol of fertility and virility. This one, made of such a unique material, highlights the artistic ability of these ancient people.
