Description:

Northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 9th to 8th century BCE. A wide, deeply concave bronze bracelet with dense, incised line decorations around its curved exterior. These form "x"s at intervals, separated by vertical lines. The ends of the bracelet taper to narrow, unpronounced terminals. The Villanovans were farmers centered around the modern town of Bologna, who controlled several mines in the mountains just to their west; they are known for their command of metallurgy. Their dead were cremated and buried inside of urns placed into pits. People deposited personal belongings like this bracelet into the pits in order to honor their ancestors.
