Description:

Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A fine glass jar with an apple-shaped body and a rim that widens from the neck. The most striking feature is the glass zigzag lattice work (rigaree) from the edge of the rim to the shoulder. In a few places on the neck, clear glass shines through, but for the most part the upper body is covered with liberal areas of thick, pearlescent patina and darker deposits. Size: 2.9" W x 2.45" H (7.4 cm x 6.2 cm)

Provenance: private Dere Family Collection, NYC, NY, acquired pre-1980

  • Condition: One tiny area of the rigaree is lost; otherwise the piece is intact. With encrusted pearlescent and rainbow iridescence as well as some darker encrustation around the upper part of the shoulder. There is no pontil mark, suggesting that the piece was either mold-blown or the pontil mark has worn away.
