Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fascinating bronze pitcher with an apple-shaped lower body, rounded shoulder, and fanciful spout. The shoulder tapers to a long, thin neck that broadens outward into a flat rim. A large strap handle flows from the rim to the shoulder on the opposite side of the body from the narrow spout. The spout is held in place by an applied decoration that calls to mind a lion's mane. The vessel stands on a flat, slightly flared base with three small, applied bronze circles elevating it. A few very shallow incised lines encircle the body and the foot, giving the surface a slight texture that would have caught and reflected light when first made. Now the piece is covered in a deep sea green patina. This type of jug is often found in the northern provinces of the Roman Empire, like northern Germany and Britain. Size: 6.75" W x 6.95" H (17.1 cm x 17.7 cm)
