Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A stunning relief inlay skillfully carved from the bone of an ungulate to display a female - perhaps a goddess - elegantly draped in a himation and chiton as she stands in contrapposto position. Framed by an archway, the ancient female turns gently to her right and gazes downward, while holding both hands to her chest. Her sweet visage is framed by a wavy coiffure and crowned by a diadem bearing a singular, tapered horn. Size: 2" W x 5.3" H (5.1 cm x 13.5 cm); 6.8" H (17.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired from an estate in 2020; ex-Paul Haig collection, Rochester, Michigan, USA; ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
