Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Guerrero Mountain area, Mezcala-Chontal, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A large green stone anthropomorphic idol figure, with a stylized, angular body, squared shoulders, arms and legs separated from the torso, the buttocks carved in relief, an expressive visage of smooth planar contours, deeply pecked sunken eyes beneath thick brows, a straight nose with demarcated nostrils, characteristically notched and pierced ears, and outlined parted lips. This open-mouth expression when viewed in concert with the hands held together over the abdominal region, suggests a somewhat trancelike, meditative, or even chanting state. Beyond this, the piece was carved from a inherently attractive stone of mottled green hues. Custom stand. Size: 3.25" W x 7.375" H (8.3 cm x 18.7 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on stand.

Provenance: Ex- Sarkisian Gallery, Denver , CO acquired in the 1950's.
