Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Maya, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A small yet stunning bead, hand-carved from mottled greenstone, depicting a fascinating human head. The face is heavily jowled, with pouchy eyes and a drooping mouth, giving an impression of great age. Drilled through vertically for suspension. An interesting example of fine Mayan jade-carving technique! Size: 1.2" W x 1.25" H (3 cm x 3.2 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
