Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Northern Peten Lowlands, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 672 to 830 CE. A truly beautiful Maya cylinder of burnished buff earthenware with polychrome pigment illustrating two pairs of figures and myriad chthonic decorations. One dark-skinned figure kneels atop a curled pedestal with a fer-de-lance snake wrapped around the legs; a dancing lord wields a stone in one hand while grasping the other figure in a sacrificial embrace. The second darker figure sits in front of a kneeling grotesque figure atop a scroll associated with a Cauac Monster mask. Behind them is a large sacrificial altar with crossed bones, and atop rests the disembodied head of a deity known as GI, or the Sun-Eyed Lord, with abstract smoke emanating from above. Along the upper body is an agnathic saurian head with a waterlily blossom and elaborate jade nostril plugs; this deity is associated with bodies of water and the underworld. A non-primary standard sequence band of glyphs indicates that this vessel was used by a lord as his personal drinking container. Size: 5.4" Diameter x 9.8" H (13.7 cm x 24.9 cm)
