Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A stunning cast-bronze axe head with a hafting socket and spikes. Across the cylindrical socket are four ribs that lead to four spikes that project from the butt end. The blade is narrow, then dramatically widens into a sharply pointed tip, and then curves sharply downward. Although it looks intimidating, the blade was not sharpened, and this axe was made for ritualistic use. This elaborate piece was made in a single cast utilizing the lost wax technique, a method of armament creation used by ancient Luristan blacksmiths. A wonderful green patina has developed upon the surface over the ages! Size: 8.75" L x .5" W x 3.375" H (22.2 cm x 1.3 cm x 8.6 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
