Magna Graecia, southern Italy, probably Campania, middle of the 4th century BCE. A truly wonderful example of the incredible iridescence Greek pottery develops over 24 centuries. Squat pelike, used for holding wine and possibly water and oil; with bulbous lower section on short foot, twin handles and flared rim. Glazed in now incredibly shiny black lead glaze with areas under each handle, above the foot, atop the rim and inside most of the body left reserved. Truly a stunning example of Greek blackware! Size: 5.75" W x 6.5" H (14.6 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s
