Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A matched pair of earrings comprised of high karat (24 kt) gold and glass beads, each with an elaborate design featuring a large, near spherical green glass bead wired between gold concave caps on a large hoop with a playful dangler comprised of a round white glass bead nestled between twisted gold wire rings, all suspended from the hoop on a gold wire below a gold loop with a conical attachment. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - adored earrings, and jewelry, in general, was particularly important to women in Roman society, because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Size: 1.375" L (3.5 cm); hoop ~ .5" W (1.3 cm); green beads measure .25" in diameter (0.6 cm); white beads measure .125" W (0.3 cm) Total weight: 2.8 grams
