Description:

Tibet, ca. mid 20th century CE. Make a statement with this stunning red coral necklace, the coral beads of cherry red hues (red and salmon orange beads are the most valuable) strung in a balanced, graduated design, with impressively large pieces front and center. In the Himalayas, coral has been a treasured material for many centuries - red coral deemed more precious than gold. Coral is also a significant ingredient used in Tibetan medicine - believed to be an antidote to poison and liver problems. Red coral in particular is thought to provide protection and ward off evil and negativity; hence, it is used to create amulets and necklaces. Traditionally, it also has been given as an heirloom or part of a dowry. Furthermore, coral is quite scarce, and many Tibetan families have traditionally considered it to be a sound investment. Size: 24" L (61 cm); largest bead measures 1.5" L (3.8 cm)
