Sino-Tibet, ca. 17th century CE. Wonderful representation of Bodhisattva Vajrapani in gilded bronze. Vajrapani is one of the earliest appearing bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. He is a protector and guide of Gautama Buddha and rose to represent the power of Buddha. His title is "Great General of the Yakshas." He is shown adorned with a wreath of human skulls and wears human skulls as part of his crown. He holds a ceremonial knife in his right hand and lidded box in his left. There are liberal remains of the added gold gilding as well as red pigmentation. One of the finest examples we have seen! Size: 10" H (25.4 cm)
