Description:

Rudy Turk (American, 1927-2007). "Bud" acrylic on canvas, 1997. Signed at lower left and on verso with title and date. A fascinating painting by Rudy Turk depicting a handsome, bare-chested man on the right and a red flower from an anthurium plant blooming in a curvaceous, striped vase on the left. Given the phallic shape of its central spike, some have nicknamed this sensually suggestive plant a "boy flower" or "penis plant". Turk has placed his two figural elements - the shirtless man and the "penis plant" still life - against a striking color block background of golden yellow, sky blue, violet, slate grey, and sienna brown. All is delineated with thickly applied paint, replete with luscious skeins and expressive gestural marks. What's more, the title "Bud" cleverly references both the man - Bud being a nickname short for Buddy - AND the flower "bud" presented in this piece! Size: 47.75" L x 36" W (121.3 cm x 91.4 cm)

Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Professor Emeritus Rudy H. Turk of Arizona State University was an artist as well as a scholar and founding director of the Arizona State University Art Museum. His artistic inspiration came from catacomb paintings and early Christian art. Turk continued to paint in his Scottsdale, Arizona studio after he retired from the university.
