Description:

South Asia, Sri Lanka, ca. early 20th century CE. A dramatic dance mask depicting a demon for a traditional Sanni Yakuma exorcism ritual to rid humans of diseases. The frightful visage is finely carved and boldly painted with a black complexion, fearsome large eyes, a prominent hooked nose, and a mustache in vivid red, white, and gold hues, jagged gold teeth, and a striated red, black, and gold painted mane. Eye slits were carved for the wearer. The pageatry of this ceremony is quite colorful and vibrant, and interestingly most Sri Lankans have never witnessed it as it is an expensive and lengthy production. Size: 5.5" W x 6.75" H (14 cm x 17.1 cm)
