Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A stunning, free-blown quadruple unguentarium formed from translucent, pale blue-green glass with a flat base and smooth pontil scar, two long tubes of greenish glass were pinched in half and fused together to create a cosmetic container with four openings. Thick trails of lime-green glass with interwoven strands of cobalt-blue and crimson glass form the angled shoulders, and an overlaid parabolic basket handle curves dramatically above the body. A single thin trail of vivid blue glass coils up from the bottom of the vessel and terminates just atop the rim. Layers of faint silvery iridescence finely accentuate the vessel's palette of vibrant colors. Size: 5" H (12.7 cm).

Cf. Newark Museum, inv. 50.1557.
