Description:

Spanish Colonial, Latin America, Guatemala, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A wonderful tin retablo painted with a Crucifixion scene known as "El Senor de Esquipulas" or "The Black Christ of Esquipulas" with a crucified Christ at the center flanked by the Virgin of Sorrows or la Virgen Dolorosa on his right and Saint John the Apostle on his left. Nude save a for a loin cloth, Jesus is depicted bloody and emaciated with a pair of flower vases at either side of his feet. The cross is fit into a cruciform niche, while John wears red and green robes and holds up the Holy Grail. Mary is draped in her traditional blue mantle as she holds her hands together in prayer, a sword pierces her heart representing the sorrow she feels at the death of her Son. Size: 10" W x 13.1" H (25.4 cm x 33.3 cm)

This figure is known as Nuestro Senor de Esquipulas and the niche may in fact represent the Santuario de Chimayo also known as the Santuario de Nuestro Senor de Esquipulas which was erected after a friar saw a mysterious light appear from a hillside in the proximity of the Santa Cruz river. According to a famous legend, this friar was curious and followed the light which was coming from the ground. He dropped to his knees and unearthed a crucifix that was later christened Nuestro Senor de Esquipulas. This crucifix was processed three times in a nearby village. All three times it disappeared only to reappear in its hole in the hillside. So the people decided that the Lord of Esquipulas wished to remain there and built a chapel at the site. In very little time, miraculous healings occurred and by 1816, that original chapel was rebuilt as the current Santuario.
