Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 18th century CE. A hand-carved wooden head that was perhaps part of a larger religious Santo or a ceremonial figure for a parade. The plaster-covered head features a broad and sturdy neck base, protruding cheeks that taper to a flat chin, a prominent nose with delineated nostrils, parted lips, cupped ears, and a smooth forehead with black-painted eyebrows. The veristic eye sockets are inlaid with a pair of chestnut-hued eyes made from thin glass panels, and the shaggy coiffure is presented with dark brown pigment. Size: 6" W x 7.5" H (15.2 cm x 19 cm)
