Description:

Ancient South Arabia, Yemen, ca. early first millennium BCE. A fascinating small figure, carved from a creamy white marble-like stone with small bands of grey and brown through it. The man is shown squatting, with his legs and arms drawn up, sharply bent at the knee and elbow. The arms seem to touch the chest of the stocky body. From the back, the figure seems to be nude, depicted with what look like powerful, naturalistic muscles on the back and buttocks. The head is rounded, with a shallow nose, bulging eyes, and a small mouth and ears. The top of the head is drilled through completely to the bottom of the figure. Similarly the chest has been drilled through in two areas - below the neck and above the waist. Who or what is this enigmatic figure? It is an idol, made to be placed in an altar and given offerings. Size: 1.7" W x 2.5" H (4.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
