Description:

Southern Arabian Peninsula, Yemen, ca. 1st - 2nd century CE. The head portion of a bearded limestone stele, with raised eyebrows, nose, ears, and mouth, deeply carved eyes that once held stone inlays, and red pigment which covers the forehead, most of face, and background "beard" area. 10"H.

Though it may seem that South Arabia is out of the way for the well known classical Mediterranean world, the area which is now Yemen was a hotspot for the spice trade, particularly with frankincense and myrrh. They are famous for their inscriptions, and especially their limestone and alabaster carvings, like this head presented here.

Provenance: Ex-William Froelich Collection, NY, acquired in the 1970s.
