Description:

South Arabia, (found in modern Saudi Arabia), ca. 1st millennium BCE. A fascinating alabaster relief featuring a trio of projecting, high relief antelope heads. Each animal's head is powerful with a very long snout and large horns. The faces stand out against the wide, smooth plaque, which also has lightly incised motifs that looks like niches or altars at its edges. Bands of russet-colored mineral inclusions flow across the butter-colored natural surface of the stone. This item was made to be part of a grave marker. The antelopes are probably symbolic of hunting, a popular pursuit among elite members of this society. Size: 4" W x 2.8" H (10.2 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Texas, USA collection; found in the 1990s near Marab al Awaisat, Saudi Arabia
