Description:

South Pacific, Solomon Islands, San Cristobal Island, 20th century. A finely carved wooden bowl of a generally ovoid form raised upon an integral pedestal foot. At either end is the head of a Bonito fish, delineated in an abstract manner with scrolled forms below. The wood is painted jet black and inlaid with abalone shell pieces that have been meticulously cut into stylized geometric forms and present with a marvelous rainbow iridescence. The iridescent white abalone shell inlays create a beautiful contrast with the black vessel. A special vessel from the Solomon Islands! Size: 17.5" W x 5.875" H (44.4 cm x 14.9 cm)
