Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero State, Xochipala culture, Mesoamerican Formative Period, ca. 13th to 10th century BCE. A charming hand-built pottery figure depicting a mother sitting cross-legged with an infant in her arms. Her flat composition boasts a straight back and sinuous arms, and perky breasts and applied beneath her sloping shoulders. A pinched triangular nose, puffy cheeks, a gaping mouth, and slit-form eyes gaze lovingly to her child beneath a simple coiffure draped to the nape of her neck. Covered in traces of red and white pigment, this is a wonderful depiction of maternal affection. Size: 1.75" W x 2.625" H (4.4 cm x 6.7 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
