Description:

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan culture, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A lovely example of a bronze sword that was cast in two pieces via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique where the blade was cast first and then the guard and hilt were cast on secondly. The elongated blade exhibits a straight, double-edged profile, a thick midrib that terminates just prior to the halfway point, and a blocky hand guard with a T-shaped recess. The rectangular hilt enabled the sword to be swung at extremely high velocities without compromising its integrity, and the tip is capped with an inverted, cup-shaped pommel. Mottled brown and green patina covers the entire weapon in a layer of attractive color. Size: 2.35" W x 25.4" H (6 cm x 64.5 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired by descent and moved from Germany in 1997; ex-private Hamburg, Germany collection, collected in the 1970s
