Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A collection of six beautiful stone beads: four agate, one onyx, and one quartzite. One is of the "fish eye" style; all are elongated forms, with all but the quartzite drilled through laterally (the quartzite example has two perforations, one at either long end). Beads of this style were some of the most popular in Mesopotamia, with agate ranked with lapis lazuli and carnelian for popular gemstones. Agate would have been traded into the region from Iran, Turkey, and even as far afield as India. Size of largest: 3" W (7.6 cm)
