Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Sinu, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a globular form with a rounded shoulder, a flared, tiered rim, and an openwork footed base. Each half of the body displays a pair of figures, one male and one female, each holding hands with the other in a proud and joyous manner. Adhered by their backs to the exterior, the couples each stare skyward in a manner evocative of the hope and happiness that coincides with matrimony. The spaces between the couples are filled with densely incised linear, latticework, spiral, and cruciform motifs. Size: 12.5" W x 9.5" H (31.8 cm x 24.1 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Poway, California, collection
