Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved carnelian intaglio depicting a left-facing biga - a two-horse chariot meant to pull a driver, likely human. The biga was intended as a means of transport but was oftentimes utilized in ceremonial processions or in a myriad of sporting activities like racing. The rider on the verso is shown holding the horses' reins in one hand while raising a whip in the other. The carnelian is set within a delicate 58.14% silver ring setting with a shank depicting lightning bolts, perhaps as an homage to Jupiter (Greek Zeus). Size (intaglio): 0.47" L x 0.31" W (1.2 cm x 0.8 cm); (ring setting): 0.57" L x 0.72" W x 0.85" H (1.4 cm x 1.8 cm x 2.2 cm); silver quality: 58.14%; weight: 3.0 grams; US ring size: 3
