Ancient Mediterranean, central Italy, Etruria, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE; Europe, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A hand-carved carnelian scarab of stunning, ovoid form bearing elaborate insectile characteristics along the top side as well as a right-facing figure on the underside. The figure presents with each hand holding a club or staff, his left leg raised and placed atop an amphora lying horizontally on the ground, and surrounded by a corded or stippled border. The scarab is set via its drilled suspension hole between the terminals of a late 19th to early 20th century gilt silver ring for wearability. Size (scarab): 0.58" L x 0.43" W x 0.26" H (1.5 cm x 1.1 cm x 0.7 cm); (ring setting): 0.43" L x 0.89" W x 0.98" H (1.1 cm x 2.3 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 88.3%; gold quality: 7.25%; total weight: 3.9 grams; US ring size: 6

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Carnelian scarab is ancient; gold ring setting is modern. Very light abrasions to scarab, otherwise intact and excellent. Small nicks to ring shank that does not impede wearability.
