Pre-Columbian, Peru, Sihuas Valley culture, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A fantastic textile belt comprised of tightly-woven camelid (llama or alpaca wool) fibers in hues of navy, sapphire, ruby, citrine, and cream. The main panel displays four sections of Janus-headed serpents, each arranged in a stepped pattern with alternating chromatic schema, and on either side are lengthy strands of dark-blue belt strands. A colorful and skillfully-created textile accessory, this is a gorgeous example from ancient Peru! Mounted on fabric backing. Size (textile): 44" L x 2" W (111.8 cm x 5.1 cm); size (backing): 58.25" L x 24" W (148 cm x 61 cm).

Provenance: private, Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H. J. Westermann collection, Germany, acquired 1960 to 1970
