Description:

Susan Kliewer (American, b. 1940). "Canyon Memories" bronze, n.d. Edition 1 of 35. Signed on back of bucket. Numbered on back hemline of skirt. A magnificent limited edition bronze sculpture of a Navajo (Dine) grandmother picking peaches from an orchard by Susan Kliewer, one of the Southwest's most acclaimed sculptors. "Canyon Memories" is part of Kliewer's historic series titled "Early Days on Navajoland" that pays homage to Navajo peoples of the 19th century. Kliewer has depicted this woman dressed in flowing garments and a long multi-strand turquoise necklace as she plucks peaches from a tree with her left hand and holds a bucket full of fruit in her right. The finely modeled and colorful patinated details imbue the figure with a touching, lifelike presence. Kliewer's inspiration for this figure was the Navajo oral tradition passed down by elders. Navajo elders shared stories of picking peaches and apples in Canyon de Chelly prior to their removal with the artist. Size: 12.7" H (32.3 cm)

A native of Southern California, Susan Kliewer has lived in Arizona for 40 years, with 5 of those years at the Marble Canyon Trading Post adjacent to the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. Kliewer started painting when she was 10 years old and took up sculpture in 1987 after working at a foundry for ten years. In 1993, Kliewer won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. In addition, she created a life-size fountain that portrays the Sinagua people as well as a fountain of a Hopi Water Maiden in Sedona. In her words, "My work aims to show the common thread that underlies all human experience, and which, I hope, brings us to a greater understanding between peoples."

Another edition of Susan Kliewer's "Canyon Memories" is listed at Medicine Man Gallery for $2,600.
