Selden I. Davis (American, 1904-1971). "Down Stream" - bromoil gelatin silver print, n.d. Hand signed and titled below. A fascinating photograph by Selden Davis, an American Pictorialist photographer who belonged to The Photographic Section of the Academy of Science and Art in Pittsburgh - the United States' oldest continuously operating Pictorialist group which originated in 1885. "Down Stream" presents a view of post war industrial Pittsburgh in Davis' signature romantic and artistically lit manner. Size of artwork: 10.375" L x 13.25" W (26.4 cm x 33.7 cm) Size of frame: 21.5" L x 23.75" W (54.6 cm x 60.3 cm)

The Pictorialists aimed to depart from commercial photography in order to focus on the marvelous aesthetics their medium made possible, oftentimes creating foggy depictions of industrial subjects. Among them was Selden Davis who did so with his elegant renderings of Pittsburgh. Davis' "Pittsburghesque" is generally regarded as one of the most significant images of Pittsburgh.

Selden Davis' "Pittsburghesque" (1948) sold for $2200 at Christie's on October 8, 1999 - lot #135.
