Description:

Rudy Turk (American, 1927-2007). "The Angel Raphael" acrylic on canvas, 1997. Signed on lower right. A striking and quite sizeable painting of Raphael by Rudy Turk, depicting the Archangel in Turk's characteristic naive manner with a bold color palette and strong black outlines. Turk enjoyed painting biblical themes with vibrant colors, and his style was very much influenced by the French Fauves, especially Georges Rouault. Here Raphael is presented with his somber visage framed by a glowing golden halo, wearing blue traveler's garments with a scalloped pilgrim's collar, his arms extended before outspread wings, holding a fish to reference his healing of Tobit's blindness with the fish's gall in one hand and a bouquet of purple flowers in the other. All is delineated with loose brushwork and lush areas of impasto. Size: 47.875" L x 36" W (121.6 cm x 91.4 cm)

Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Professor Emeritus Rudy H. Turk of Arizona State University was an artist as well as a scholar and founding director of the Arizona State University Art Museum. His artistic inspiration came from catacomb paintings and early Christian art. Turk continued to paint in his Scottsdale, Arizona studio after he retired from the university.
