Description:

Rudy Turk (American, 1927-2007). "Picasso at Arles" acrylic on canvas, 1993. Signed and dated on lower right. A fabulous painting by Rudy Turk featuring a single flower in a vessel before a window with a red frame that showcases a lovely view, presumably of Arles as suggested by the title. The flower and the golden pitcher are presented in a grand scale, and the vessel in particular is delineated in a cubist manner, as if captured from multiple angles simultaneously. In addition, Turk's rich brushstrokes and thick palette knife work imbue the composition with great character and expression. Size: 24" L x 20" W (61 cm x 50.8 cm)

Arles was a special place for Picasso, as he was attracted to the presence of Vincent Van Gogh. Picasso had his first exhibition in Arles at the Reattu Museum in 1957, and the following year, he created a series of 8 portraits of Jacqueline wearing Arlesian garments in Vauvenargues. Years later, in 1971, Picasso donated 57 paintings to the Reattu Museum.

Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Rudy H. Turk was an artist as well as a professor at Arizona State University and a founding director of the Arizona State University Art Museum. His artistic inspiration came from catacomb paintings and early Christian art. Turk continued to paint in his Scottsdale, Arizona studio after he retired from the university.
