Description:

Roman, Early Imperial Period, ca. 120 to 180 CE. A mold-formed earthenware oil lamp with a clear planta pedis (maker's mark) stamped into the base reading MNOVIVST ("Made by: M. Novius Justus"). The lamp has a flat base, a circular body with a recessed tondo, a pierced tab handle, and a protruding wick spout, all covered in dark red-orange slip. Within the tondo is a relief depiction of a slave standing with a volute-handled amphora with a ringed neck. A fine example of Roman utilitarian artistry! Size: 4.1" L x 2.75" W x 1.7" H (10.4 cm x 7 cm x 4.3 cm)

For a nearly identical example with a maker's mark from the same individual (M. Novius Justus), please see The British Museum, museum number 1905,0520.157.

  • Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to base, wick spout, body, and handle, with fading and darkening to original slip color, and a couple of stable hairline fissures along base and body, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits and remains of original pigment throughout. Planta pedis beneath base is still legible and incredibly clear.
