Peter Brandes (Danish, b. 1944). "Tiger" from Zodiac Animals series. A monoprint transfer drawing. Ca. 1990. Signed in pencil on the lower left. Any enthusiast of the Chinese zodiac and/or magnificent wild felines will appreciate this monotype transfer drawing of a tiger from the Chinese zodiac. Brandes is appreciated for his modern interpretations of symbolic figures from various traditions, including Greek mythology as well as themes from Norse and Christian traditions. In China, the tiger is the king of all beasts and symbolizes powerful energy. In addition, the tiger is associated with the deity Tsai Shen Yeh, the God of Wealth, who is usually depicted sitting atop a tiger in Asian art. Some also believe that the tiger is the protector of the deceased, often seen in graves assuring peace for all eternity. Danish artist Peter Brandes has had a remarkable career. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions at important galleries and museums such as the Kunsthallen Brandts and the Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art. The current record price for Brandes' works at auction is $20,894 USD for his "Leiden Schaft, Colombes" which sold at Bruun Rasmussen Bredgade in 2014.
A transfer monoprint or monotype is achieved by placing a fully inked metal plate beneath a piece of paper. Then, being extra careful not to touch the paper with one's hands since any area that is touched will transfer ink to the paper, the artist draws an image in pencil. Areas are rubbed or scribbled over with pencil in order to create tones on the piece. Once the artist is happy with the image, the paper is pulled from the plate. Then voila! - the final print is visible on the reverse side of the paper, because the ink transferred to the paper.
