Erich Buchholz (German, 1891-1972), untitled serigraph, numbered 18/150, 1969 CE. A wonderful example of Non-Objective (also known as Concrete Art) created by Erich Buchholz, a central figure of this movement which developed in Berlin between 1918 and 1924, dated and signed in pencil on the lower left by the artist, depicting an abstract geometric composition in a minimalist palette of red, green, and white. During the 1920s, Buchholz was an avid participant in the Berlin art scene along with such leading lights as László Moholy-Nagy. However, Buchholz's artistic activity was put on hold in 1925 due to economic hardship and then in 1933 the National Socialist authorities forbid him to paint. In 1945 following World War II Buchholz was able to resume his creative endeavors. During the 1950s and 60s, his art was well-received and featured in a number of solo exhibitions in Europe as well as the United States. This piece, created in the 1960s, resembles Buchholz's screen prints entitled "Constant-Variables" which revisited his early modern approach of the 1920s. Here he explores the idea that a work of art can permeate time and space by using minimal criteria with respect to composition - the simple play of line and geometric forms, the vertical and horizontal axes - as well as the color palette. Size: 17.75" W x 12.6" H (45.1 cm x 32 cm)
