Description:

European, purportedly Portugal, untitled bronze figural sculpture, signed "Shifrin" (sp), ca. mid 20th century CE. A sculpture that represents a popular sentiment of the postwar avant-garde art. The focus here is on the figure, however with an existentialist interpretation - his body walking forward but displaying the ravages of violence, his head bowed over, his shoulders hunched over, his broad and once muscular but now gaunt almost corpse-like body with ribcage clearly delineated and bony limbs, and finally, brutal violence symbolized by his spiked helmet. The style is reminiscent of Giacometti's existentialist expressions of angst in a postwar wasteland or Jean Dubuffet's L'Art Brut interpretations of the human figure. A powerful post-war sculpture. Size: 16.125" H (41 cm); 17.375" H (44.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s from Ken Bowers, New York City
