Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Yupik or Athabascan, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A painted walrus baculum in black ink with a hunter in a kayak paddling toward a walrus on an ice floe, the verso is signed "John Tegoseak" possibly a Yupik or Athabascan artist active in the 20th century CE. The bone is older and possibly fossilized, the baculum also known as an oosik, comes from the walrus' penis, the washed-up bones are collected on beaches or taken after hunts to use for carvings and tools. Size: 10.75" L x 1.75" Diameter (27.3 cm x 4.4 cm)
