Description:

Rookwood Pottery Vase by Kataro Shirayamadani (Japanese, 1865-1948) - ca. 1912 (Shirayamadani worked for Rookwood 1887 to 1912 and 1920 to 1948). An exceptional Rookwood vase by Kataro Shirayamadani, who is generally considered to be one of Rookwood's most talented artists. The vessel is marked on the base with Kataro Shirayamadani's incised signature, the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), identifying shape number "952 B", and an incised "V" for Vellum Glaze. The vase presents a tall, cylindrical form that incurves at the rim and is decorated all around the exterior with a breathtaking Tonalist landscape scene featuring blooming lotus flowers rising from a pond and a grove of trees on the hillside beyond; this composition is demarcated by carved borders above and below. All is delineated in a tranquil palette of cobalt, teal, seafoam, white, and yellow hues. Size: 5.25" in diameter x 12.625" H (13.3 cm x 32.1 cm)

The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists. Rookwood hired Kataro Shirayamadani away from the Boston Fujiyama shop in 1887. Shirayamadani worked for Rookwood from 1887 until 1912, then moved back to Japan where he worked for the government, and finally returned in 1920, working at Rookwood until he passed away in 1948. Shirayamadani was responsible for many of the Rookwood vase shapes and created the most beautiful paintings on his vessels, rendering scenes with a style that blended his eastern training with a western sensibility. Shirayamadani's name means "White Mountain Valley" but his American friends endearingly called him Sherry.
