Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). "Girl in a Turkish Coat" oil wash on paper, n.d. Signature on lower right (over brown wash). A striking painting by Jon Zahourek depicting a beautiful woman sitting on a comfortable rolled arm chair, wearing a Turkish coat with a furry shearling collar that is open at the front, revealing her bare legs resting upon one of the chair's arms while she gazes ahead, her arresting visage presenting delicate features framed by wavy brunette tresses. A radiant composition delineated in a vibrant palette of peacock blue, violet, lavender, rose, peach, gold, and chocolate brown hues. Zahourek's passion for anatomy as well as his artistic process is strongly conveyed in this scintillating vision. Zahourek himself has described his creative method as somewhat organic and dissociative. In his words, "Paintings and drawings and sculpture were all a surprise. The kinesthetic mind was doing the artwork, not the conscious mind." Size (sight view): 18.4" L x 21" W (46.7 cm x 53.3 cm) Size (frame): 25" L x 27.5" W (63.5 cm x 69.8 cm)
In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
