Description:

Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). "Flowered Robe" oil on board, n.d. Signature on lower right section of robe. A striking painting by Jon Zahourek depiciting a beautiful woman who dons a floral robe that is open at the front so as to reveal her nudity beneath. Zahourek painted the woman in a half-length pose, capturing her in the act of either putting on or taking off her robe. She bows her head slightly while gazing downward with generously lashed eyes, and her goddess-like visage is framed by long, voluminous strawberry blonde tresses. This radiant vision is delineated in a vibrant palette of strawberry, rose, coral, peach, sienna, tangerine, and gold hues. Zahourek's passion for anatomy as well as his artistic process is strongly conveyed in this scintillating vision. Zahourek himself has described his creative method as somewhat organic and dissociative. In his words, "Paintings and drawings and sculpture were all a surprise. The kinesthetic mind was doing the artwork, not the conscious mind." Size: 35.375" L x 23.375" W (89.9 cm x 59.4 cm) Size: 44.625" L x 32.5" W (113.3 cm x 82.6 cm)

In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
