Description:

Jimmy Ernst (American, 1920-1984). Untitled serigraph. Ca. 1960s. Numbered in pencil on lower left 45/275. Signed in pencil on lower right. An amazing abstract serigraph on paper by Jimmy Ernst - son of Dada and Surrealist pioneer Max Ernst. The composition is entirely non-objective without any transparent references to representational imagery - presenting bold geometric motifs in royal blue, sky blue, and yellow. Ernst studied printing and typography prior to immigrating to the United States in 1938 to escape the Nazis. In 1941, he began working at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and later worked for the legendary Peggy Guggenheim. In 1943, Ernst and Eleanor Lust opened the Norlyst Gallery where he first exhibited his own work. In 1950, Ernst also became a member of The Irascibles group joining the ranks of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and other New York School artists, who were challenging The Metropolitan Museum of Art's bias against the budding Abstract Expressionist movement. Size: 29.75" W x 23.125" H (75.6 cm x 58.7 cm); w/ border 32.75" W x 26" H (83.2 cm x 66 cm)
